The Message I Was Going to Share at the Prison Ministry
Hello, my name is Joshua.
I am Korean. South or North? I am from South Korea.
North and South Korea are the same people, but completely different nations. And we are still at war, even now.
That is why every South Korean man must serve in the army. I didn’t have to go, because of a few reasons.
But I had dreamed of being a missionary since I was young. I believed God could use even the army as my mission field. So I chose to go.
During my service, I fell while working on a tank. I badly injured my right shoulder.
The tendon was torn. I had surgery. But I could barely use my arm anymore.
Even now, more than ten years later, it still hurts when the weather is bad.
I felt like I could do almost nothing.
My officers and fellow soldiers, for a whole year, almost every day, called me “useless,” “trash.”
I could not even carry my own gun or my own bag.
Emotionally and physically, I truly felt worthless.
But even though my body and emotions were broken, my spirit was not.
I prayed every day, and I read the Word every day. I even prayed for the people who hurt me.
And God spoke to me.
“Joshua, I know you. Even if everyone calls you trash, you are my beloved son.”
After I heard those words, God began to work. The people who hurt me changed, and I was able to help others again.
Near the end of my service, North Korea threatened us. It looked like war could start.
We were given guns and live ammunition, and the tanks were loaded, ready. It felt like war could start at any moment.
I had about ten days left in my service. Then an order came.
“Joshua, go home.”
What did I say? I said no.
There was no pastor in our unit, and I was the only Christian. I said that if war came, I would stay here and be the one who prayed beside my fellow soldiers.
I signed a paper giving up my discharge, and I went back to my fellow soldiers.
And the day after I decided to stay, North and South Korea made an agreement. Everything returned to peace.
I was on the news, and my fellow soldiers and commanders—the very people who once called me trash—now called me a hero.
But in that moment, I remembered God’s promise to lift up my head.
Even now, my shoulder still hurts when the weather is bad.
That scar reminds me of the Lord who said, “You are my beloved son.” I remember His faithfulness.
And through this experience, I repented—for never praying for the people locked inside the great prison called North Korea.
My friends, what I really want to tell you today is not my story. I want to tell you who God is. That is what I want to tell you.
God, even when no one else looked at me, He knew me.
When people called me useless, God called me His beloved son.
He is the same God to you. He knows your name, and even here, He has not forgotten you.
God loved us so much that He sent His own Son, Jesus, to this earth.
Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sins, and He rose again on the third day.
No matter what we have done, no matter where we are right now, if we believe in Jesus and come to Him, we are forgiven and made new.
The walls of this prison can hold your body, but they cannot hold your soul.
Today, right now, right where you are, you can come to Jesus.
You can pray in your heart.
“Jesus, forgive me. I need you. Come into my life right now.”
If you pray this from your heart, God receives you as His own child.
Prayer
God, we bless everyone here today. You know their names, and You love them.
Meet them right here, right now, and give them true freedom and true peace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
